That is the view of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who helped Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to Nations League glory on Sunday.
It was Ronaldo’s hat-trick that fired the 2016 European Championship winners into the final against Netherlands where Gonzalo Guedes scored the only goal to crown Portugal as winners.
When asked after the fixture whether Ronaldo is the best player on the planet, Neves took little time to give a definitive response.
He told ITV: “Of course, yes [Ronaldo is the best player in the world right now].
I can’t see any one better than him.”
When prompted to give his view on whether Lionel Messi had a claim to that title, the 22-year-old remained certain.
He added: ”No of course not [Messi is not as good], Cristiano is the best.
“He showed that in the semi-finals [against Switzerland] and again today with a great game, we are lucky to have him in our team.
For me he is the best ever, I’m a really lucky guy to be able to play alongside him, I say thank you to Ronaldo and congratulations to the team.”
Juventus legend Antonio Carbrini has his say on the Messi vs Ronaldo debate earlier this month, and claimed that the Portuguese is ahead because of one key quality.
“Probably, yes [Ronaldo is the best player in the world],” Carbrini told Express Sport.
“Obviously the last 10 years in club football has been focused on the rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
